‘Who is Erin Carter?’, filmed in Sitges, launches on Netflix

‘Who Is Erin Carter?’ – a seven-part limited series filmed in Sitges and Barcelona launches on Netflix this Thursday (see official trailer below).

Created by Doc Martin and Strike Back writer Jack Lothian, the series follows a British ex-pat teacher whose past catches up with her after she’s caught up in a supermarket robbery.

Netflix’s synopsis of the series promises an intriguing story, following Erin, the ‘mum, wife, and teacher’, whose life is at risk of unravelling when it becomes apparent that she is more than she lets on after she is recognised by an armed robber.

The supply teacher has moved with her family to Sitges, where it would appear she is hoping to cover her tracks.

Filming took place in Sitges during late April and May 2022, under an orignal working title of Palomino. Initial locations used were around the church, the Casa Vidal Quadras in Port Alegre, and ‘La Torreta’ viewing area overlooking San Sebastián beach.

The crew also filmed on Passeig de la Ribera, in the Hotel ME, in a house in Can Girona, in the port of Vallcarca and on the road that goes up to Campdàsens. At the end of May, the team returned to Sitges to shoot further sequences, including some on Carrer Santiago Rusiñol and on the section of the Carretera de les Costes, near the hospital.

Around 100 people took part in the filming in Sitges. The team set up camp in the Aquatic car park and installed staff support catering near La Fragata.

Netflix has released the following synopsis of Who Is Erin Carter?:

‘Meet Erin — mum, wife and teacher living the ex-pat dream in Spain. Or so we think until she finds herself caught up in a robbery in a supermarket, which then leads to her being revealed as a badass fighter! Erin is clearly not who she says she is, but who exactly is she and how far will she go to keep her true identity at bay as her life begins to unravel?

‘Who Is Erin Carter? combines a unique blend of genres: Erin’s family life and work life at the local international school offers rich character-driven domestic drama, while the crime story combines nail-biting plot twists with breath-taking action sequences.

‘The story begins as we see Erin and a small child leaving the UK behind and it’s clear that they are running away from someone or something — and then we pick up the story several years down the line as Erin and her daughter Harper are settled and (mostly) happy in Barcelona, with Erin working a substitute teacher job that she’s hoping to turn into a permanent position.

‘But when she and Harper get caught up in the supermarket robbery, Erin deploys some incredible fighting skills to fend off the robbers, which make it clear that she’s no run-of-the-mill teacher — and one of the robbers appears to recognise her, which sends Erin into her panic. But what exactly has she been running from, and is it finally about to catch up with her?’

The title role is played by Evin Ahmad – a Swedish actress with Kurdish heritage, who has become a household name in her home country, and has received more recent global acclaim such as being named the Rising Star at 2022’s Berlin International Film Festival.

Erin’s fictional family are husband Jordi and daughter Harper, played by Sean Teale and Indica Watson. The series also features local actress Charlotte Vega.
