After the Festa Major, the Sitges Volunteer Fire Brigade will be halting their operations in protest for improved labour conditions, and will only act in situations of clear emergencies.
The Girona Volunteer Fire Brigade were the first to announce, at the beginning of August, that they were also ceasing to be operational due to what they consider the ‘inaction’ of the General Directorate of Prevention, Fire Extinguishing and Rescue of the Catalan Government, in the face of labour improvements that they have been demanding for decades in terms of health protection or coverage in the event of an accident.
Like other Volunteer Fire stations across Catalonia, the one in Sitges has also joined these shared demands and, as of this coming week, it will become inoperative.
The 15 volunteer firefighters from Sitges have committed to maintaining the usual preventive services on the days of the Festa Major. In other possible cases, they will only act in situations of clear emergency.
