This week has seen the sculpture of ‘La dona asseguda nua’ (‘The woman sitting naked’) return to the Passeig de la Ribera in Sitges, after being restored following the act of vandalism it suffered in May 2021, when it was left broken and decapitated.
The statue has been fully restored and cleaned by the Sitges restorer, Mònica Roca, who also had to replace the head, in a process supervised by the Consortium of the Heritage of Sitges, and commissioned by the local council’s department of image and public highways, together with the cultural department.
The sculpture Dona asseguda nua dates from 1965 and is the work of the Noucentista sculptor Josep Busquets (1914-1998). It is made of stone and is 98 cm high. It was not the first act of vandalism suffered by this statue; in 2002 it was also left headless. The statue is part of a dozen other sculptures along La Ribera.
Yet another sculpture in the area, Apollo, suffered a similar act of vandalism at the 2019 Carnival and was later restored. The Sitges Town Council has again called for civility and to stop any vandalism.
