Sitges Port set to host training sessions of Spanish women’s team for America’s Cup

Sitges is set to be the host nautical base for the Spanish women’s team training for the America’s Cup during the months leading up to the competition, as well as to host their selection process.

The negotiations carried out by the Port of Sitges, the Nautical Club and the Sitges Town Council have ended up bearing fruit, and the town is set to become a sub-site of the America’s Cup between 12 September and end of October this year.

The 37th edition of the America’s Cup will be held in Barcelona between August and October 2024. The city will be the first venue ever to host both an Olympic Games and an America’s Cup yachting event.

In this 37th edition, the America’s Cup will reach a historic milestone. For the first time in its 172 years, the event will have a female competition – with Sitges set to be part of it, according to the Port of Sitges and Club Nàutic, two of the fundamental socio-economic entities behind this initiative.

At the moment there is no closed and definitive agreement, but there have been talks with the Spanish female team, Sail Team BCN, for Sitges to host, from mid-September to the end of October this year, the selection process for this category of the Spanish team.

In addition, the Port also emphasise that they want to go further that just these two months, with the idea being that once the team of eight sailors is selected, the athletes can train using Sitges as a nautical base, specifically at the Port of Aiguadolç, until the start of the competition in the summer of 2024 in Barcelona. It also seeks to host the selection and training sessions of the Spanish youth team.
