Small earthquake confirmed in Alt Penedès and Garraf region

Residents of the region of Alt Penedès and Garraf (in the province of Barcelona) were surprised by a small earthquake of magnitude 2.6 at 3.45am on Thursday morning.

Confirmed by the Cartographic and Geological Institute of Catalonia (ICGC), the earthquake did not cause any damage.

The epicentre of the earthquake was detected in Subirats, between Vilafranca del Penedès and Martorell, and was across eight kilometres.

According to Michigan Tech University, earthquakes with a magnitude scale of between 2.5 and 5.4 are ‘often felt, but only cause minor damage’. Globally, there are around 500,000 earthquakes within this magnitude a year.
