Young man arrested for two fires in the Garraf park near Sitges

The Catalan police, the Mossos d’Esquadra, arrested a 22-year-old man in Vilanova on Thursday as the alleged perpetrator of the two fires in the Garraf massif in recent weeks.

This follows investigations that have been carried out by the Mossos and rural agents in relation to the two fires that started in Sant Pere de Ribes on 18 June, and in Olivella, on 21 June.

The young detainee, along with a female minor, were reportedly both seen near the areas where the fires started. The young man was taken to court in Vilanova on Friday, while the minor gave a statement as an alleged collaborator in the crime.

The Olivella fire, which started near Can Suriol, burned 184 hectares in the Garraf Natural Park. The one in Sant Pere de Ribes took place in the area of Can Pere de la Plana – which had already suffered another fire two months ago – and burned 23 hectares of forest.
