Incidents requiring police intervention increased by 26% during the pandemic

The Covid-19 pandemic has seen an increase of incidents in Sitges requiring a police presence or intervention, according to figures released to coincide with an institutional event held for the local police.

The increase in ‘botellones’ (street drinking) as well as ‘irregular street selling’ have been the main focus for actions carried out by the police, particularly during the summer months.

Crime incidents have increased dramatically during 2021. During the first nine months of this year alone, the incidents requiring a police presence have already exceeded the full year figures of 2019, with a total to date of 17,655 police interventions. Since the start of the pandemic, the number of incidents has also increased: the police assisted in 21,194 incidents during 2020, which is 26% more than in 2019.

Vicenç Cardona, a sergeant in the Sitges local police, said during the institutional event last Friday that ‘now we are once again the police we need to be, on a model of proximity to the citizens’.
