CORONAVIRUS in SPAIN – latest Health Ministry figures
The latest official figure released by the Spanish Health Ministry on Wednesday 18 Aug for the number of people who have tested positive for Coronavirus since the start of the pandemic is now 4,745,558. This is an overall increase of 11,956 against the figure released on Tuesday, of which 7,006 have been registered in the past 24 hours.
Tuesday had seen an overall increase of 14,336 over Monday, of which 5,558 were registered in 24 hours. The peak of recorded infections for a 24-hour period during the pandemic in Spain was on 21 January, when 18,504 cases were registered.
The overall incidence rate across Spain has fallen by 20 points to 378.13 per 100,000 inhabitants for the past 14 days. On Tuesday it was 398.94 and Monday 415.90.
The incidence rate has fallen since yesterday for each age group per 100,000 inhabitants for the past 14 days, as follows:
- Under 11 – 403 (Friday was 420)
- Aged 12-19 – 804 (854)
- Aged 20-29 – 715 (769)
- Aged 30-39 – 389 (414)
- Aged 40-49 – 281 (294)
- Aged 50-59 – 249 (261)
- Agend 60-69 – 212 (225)
- Aged 70-79 – 186 (192)
- Over 80 – 259 (264)
There have now been 179,428 cases of Coronavirus detected in the past 14 days – out of the total 4,745,558. The figure for the past 7 days is 71,475.
There are currently 8,819 people requiring hospital treatment for Covid-19 in Spain (9,191 yesterday), of which 1,861 are in intensive care (1,931). This represents 20.28% occupation of intensive care units (ICUs) by Covid-19 patients across Spain (20.96%). It remains highest at 42.50% in Catalonia (41.35%).
The official figure for the total number of Coronavirus-related deaths since the start of the pandemic on Wednesday 18 Aug is 82,739 – another increase of 144 since Tuesday, matching yesterday’s highest daily increase since May.
Increase in infections per region
Of the 7,006 new infections to have only been registered in the past 24 hours on Wednesday 18 Aug, the numbers per region are as follows:
- 1,676 in Madrid (last 24 hour increase was 1,568)
- 1,023 in Catalonia (1,272)
- 687 in the Basque Country (574)
- 587 in Castilla y León (266)
- 439 in Extremadura (290)
- 428 in the Valencia Region (137)
- 334 in Murcia (174)
- 319 in Galicia (213)
- 285 in the Canary Islands (270)
- 250 in Aragón (80)
- 213 in Andalusia (79)
- 167 in the Balearic Islands (126)
- 157 in Cantabria (110)
- 148 in Navarra (154)
- 107 in La Rioja (71)
- 92 in Asturias (46)

Covid-19 Vaccinations in Spain
Latest figures (up to 18 Aug) show that Spain has administered 62,193,144 jabs of Covid-19 vaccines. 35,072,910 people have now received at least one jab, representing 73.9% of the total population. 30,261,332 people have now been fully vaccinated, which is 63.8% of the total population.
