CORONAVIRUS in SPAIN – latest Health Ministry figures

The latest official figure released by the Spanish Health Ministry on Monday 16 Aug for the number of people who have tested positive for Coronavirus since the start of the pandemic is now 4,719,266. This is an overall increase of 25,726 against the figure released on Friday, of which 2,749 have been registered in the past 24 hours.

Friday had seen an overall increase of 15,657 over Thursday, of which 7,968 were registered in 24 hours. The peak of recorded infections for a 24-hour period during the pandemic in Spain was on 21 January, when 18,504 cases were registered.

The overall incidence rate across Spain has fallen by 46 points to 415.90 per 100,000 inhabitants for the past 14 days. On Friday it was 462.23 and Thursday 483.12.

The incidence rate has fallen since yesterday for each age group per 100,000 inhabitants for the past 14 days, as follows:

  • Under 11 – 427 (Friday was 471)
  • Aged 12-19 – 876 (997)
  • Aged 20-29 804 (931)
  • Aged 30-39 – 433 (497)
  • Aged 40-49 – 301 (330)
  • Aged 50-59 – 268 (294)
  • Agend 60-69 – 231 (259)
  • Aged 70-79 – 196 (209)
  • Over 80 – 264 (283)

There have now been 197,350 cases of Coronavirus detected in the past 14 days – out of the total 4,719,266. The figure for the past 7 days is 79,830. 

There are currently 9,356 people requiring hospital treatment for Covid-19 in Spain (9,308 on Friday), of which 1,931 are in intensive care (1,922). This represents 20.96% occupation of intensive care units (ICUs) by Covid-19 patients across Spain (20.78%). It remains highest at 43.80% in Catalonia (44.39%).

The official figure for the total number of Coronavirus-related deaths since the start of the pandemic on Monday 16 Aug is 82,595 – an increase of 125 since Friday.

Increase in infections per region

Of the 2,749 new infections to have only been registered in the past 24 hours on Monday 16 Aug, the numbers per region are as follows:

  • 502 in the Basque Country (last 24 hour increase was 816)
  • 469 in Catalonia (1,042)
  • 352 in Madrid (1,844)
  • 219 in the Canary Islands (447)
  • 193 in Cantabria (205)
  • 189 in Galicia (471)
  • 183 in Extremadura (327)
  • 158 in Aragón (392)
  • 122 in Andalusia (488)
  • 96 in Navarra (209)
  • 91 in the Balearic Islands (130)
  • 55 in Asturias (129)
  • 49 in La Rioja (111)
  • 21 in Murcia (379)
  • 16 in the Valencia Region (244)
  • in Castilla La Mancha (35) 
  • 0 in Castilla y León (643) – no update due to public holiday
  • 17 in Ceuta (43)
  • 15 in Melilla (13)

Covid-19 Vaccinations in Spain

Latest figures (up to 16 Aug) show that Spain has administered 61,418,303 jabs of Covid-19 vaccines. 34,716,227 people have now received at least one jab, representing 73.2% of the total population. 29,794,008 people have now been fully vaccinated, which is 62.8% of the total population.
