CORONAVIRUS in SPAIN – latest Health Ministry figures
The latest official figure released by the Spanish Health Ministry on Thursday 5 Aug for the number of people who have tested positive for Coronavirus since the start of the pandemic is now 4,566,571. This is an overall increase of 21,387 against the figure released on Wednesday, of which 11,315 have occurred in the past 24 hours. The Basque Country has not updated its figures today for ‘technical reasons’.
Wednesday had seen an overall increase of 21,874 over Tuesday, of which 11,765 occurred in 24 hours. The peak of recorded infections for a 24-hour period during the pandemic in Spain was on 21 January, when 18,504 cases were registered.
The overall incidence rate has fallen by another 19 points to 614.88 per 100,000 inhabitants for the past 14 days. On Wednesday it was 633.81 and Tuesday 653.81.
The incidence for each age group per 100,000 inhabitants for the past 14 days is as follows:
- Under 11 – 565 (yesterday 532)
- Aged 12-19 – 1,360 (1,318)
- Aged 20-29 – 1,403 (1,387)
- Aged 30-39 – 717 (701)
- Aged 40-49 – 412 (392)
- Aged 50-59 – 347 (322)
- Agend 60-69 – 315 (296)
- Aged 70-79 – 223 (202)
- Over 80 – 296 (272)
There have now been 291,765 cases of Coronavirus detected in the past 14 days – out of the total 4,566,571. The figure for the past 7 days is 121,671.
There are currently 10,004 people requiring hospital treatment for Covid-19 in Spain (10,184 yesterday), of which 1,925 are in intensive care (1,904 yesterday). This represents 20.78% occupation of intensive care units (ICUs) by Covid-19 patients across Spain (20.76% yesterday). It remains highest at 48% in Catalonia.
The official figure for the total number of Coronavirus-related deaths since the start of the pandemic on Thursday 5 Aug is 81,931 – an increase of 87 since Wednesday.
Increase in infections per region
Of the 11,315 new infections to have only been registered in the past 24 hours on Thursday 5 Aug, the numbers per region are as follows:
- 2,828 in Madrid (last 24 hour increase was 3,193)
- 1,695 in Catalonia (1,861)
- 985 in the Basque Country (985) – no update today
- 810 in Castilla y León (824)
- 754 in the Canary Islands (727)
- 678 in Aragón (621)
- 671 in Galicia (695)
- 570 in Andalusia (559)
- 466 in Murcia (397)
- 430 in Extremadura (385)
- 279 in Navarra (301)
- 268 in the Valencia Region (296)
- 229 in Asturias (201)
- 190 in the Balearic Islands (212)

Covid-19 Vaccinations in Spain
Latest figures (up to 5 Aug) show that Spain has administered 58,102,441 jabs of Covid-19 vaccines. 32,892,680 people have now received at least one jab, representing 69.3% of the total population. 28,034,427 people have now been fully vaccinated, which is 59.1% of the total population.
