CORONAVIRUS in SPAIN – latest Health Ministry figures

The latest official figure released by the Spanish Health Ministry on Friday 16 July for the number of people who have tested positive for Coronavirus since the start of the pandemic is now 4,100,222. This is an overall increase of 31,060 against the figure released on Thursday, of which 16,667 have occurred in the past 24 hours

Thursday had seen an overall increase of 27,858 over Wednesday, of which 15,858 occurred in 24 hours. The peak of recorded infections for a 24-hour period during the pandemic in Spain was on 21 January, when 18,504 cases were registered.

The overall incidence rate has jumped another 37 points to 537.34 per 100,000 inhabitants for the past 14 days. On Thursday it was 500.75 and Wednesday 469.50. The incidence rate is at its highest in Catalonia (1,160), Castilla y León (862) and Navarra (863).

The incidence for each age group per 100,000 inhabitants for the past 14 days is as follows:

  • Under 11 – 187 (yesterday 260)
  • Aged 12-19 – 837 (1,311)
  • Aged 20-29 – 996 (1,581) *
  • Aged 30-39 – 475 (658)
  • Aged 40-49 – 224 (311)
  • Aged 50-59 – 129 (183)
  • Agend 60-69 – 145 (172)
  • Aged 70-79 – 61 (71)
  • Over 80 – 87 (86)

*In Catalonia the incidence rate for the 20-29 age group is 3,401 and in Castilla y León it is 3,692 – meaning that over 1 in 30 people in that age bracket in both regions have contracted Covid within the past 14 days.

There have now been 254,974 cases of Coronavirus detected in the past 14 days – out of the total 4,100,222. The figure for the past 7 days is 142,739

There are currently 5,056 people requiring hospital treatment for Covid-19 in Spain (4,705 yesterday), of which 872 are in intensive care (838 yesterday). This represents 9.59% occupation of intensive care units (ICUs) by Covid-19 patients across Spain (9.18% yesterday). It is now over 26% in Catalonia.

The official figure for the total number of Coronavirus-related deaths since the start of the pandemic on Friday 16 July is 81,096 – an increase of 12 since Thursday.

Increase in infections per region

Of the 16,667 new infections to have only been registered in the past 24 hours on Friday 16 July, the numbers per region are as follows:

  • 4,649 in Catalonia – (last 24 hour increase was 4,204)
  • 3,078 in Madrid (3,090)
  • 1,665 in Castilla y León (1,665)
  • 1,160 in the Basque Country (1,044)
  • 1,009 in Aragón (1,046)
  • 832 in Galicia (780)
  • 695 in the Canary Islands (655)
  • 622 in Navarra (603)
  • 608 in Andalusia (550)
  • 538 in Asturias (541)
  • 467 in the Valencia Region (469)
  • 401 in Extremadura (440)
  • 300 in Cantabria (343)
  • 283 in the Balearic Islands (0) – no update yesterday
  • 278 in Murcia (327)
  • 25 in Castilla La Mancha (44) 
  • 28 in La Rioja (31)
  • 19 in Ceuta (15)
  • 10 in Melilla (11)

Covid-19 Vaccinations in Spain

Latest figures (up to 16 July) show that Spain has received 53,907,858 doses of Covid-19 vaccines and that 50,239,048 jabs have been administered. 29,033,376 people have now received at least one jab, representing 61.2% of the total population. 23,372,796 people have now been fully vaccinated, which is 49.3% of the total population.
