CORONAVIRUS in SPAIN – latest Health Ministry figures

The latest official figure released by the Spanish Health Ministry on Wednesday 12 May for the number of people who have tested positive for Coronavirus since the start of the pandemic is now 3,592,751. This is an overall increase of 6,418 against the figure released on Tuesday, and of which 3,210 have occurred in the past 24 hours.

Tuesday had seen an overall increase of 4,941 cases over Monday, of which 2,768 occurred in 24 hours. The peak of recorded infections for a 24-hour period during this third wave of the pandemic in Spain was on 21 January, when 18,504 cases were registered. 

The overall incidence rate has dropped another seven points to 173.78 per 100,000 inhabitants for the past 14 days. On Tuesday it was 180.69 and Monday 188.97.

It now remains above the ‘extreme risk’ level in just three regions: the Basque Country (371), Madrid (277) and Aragón (269). It is under 100 in seven regions: Valencia (32), the Balearic Islands (55), Murcia (62), the Canary Islands (86), Extremadura (88), Asturias (87) and Galicia (91).

There have now been 82,462 cases of Coronavirus detected in the past 14 days – out of the total 3,592,751. The figure for the past 7 days is 36,011

There are currently 7,696 people requiring hospital treatment for Covid-19 in Spain, of which 1,991 are in intensive care. This represents 20.11% occupation of intensive care units (ICUs) by Covid-19 patients across Spain. 

The official figure for the total number of Coronavirus-related deaths on Wednesday 12 May is now 79,208 – an increase of 108 since Tuesday.

Increase in infections per region

Of the 3,210 new infections to have only been registered in the past 24 hours on Wednesday 12 May, the numbers per region are as follows:

  • 1,225 in Madrid (last 24 hour increase was 1,099)
  • 457 in the Basque Country (424)
  • 225 in Aragón (156)
  • 212 in Andalusia (119)
  • 185 in the Canary Islands (101)
  • 184 in Castilla y León (265)
  • 141 in Catalonia (89)
  • 96 in Galicia (72)
  • 86 in Extremadura (50)
  • 74 in the Valencia Region (44)
  • 66 in Navarra (75)
  • 51 in Castilla La Mancha (39)
  • 46 in Cantabria (51)
  • 45 in Asturias (51)
  • 44 in Murcia (45) 
  • 44 in La Rioja (36)
  • 11 in the Balearic Islands (27)
  • 0 in Ceuta (0)
  • 18 in Melilla (24)

Covid-19 Vaccinations in Spain

Latest figures (up to 12 May) show that Spain has received 23,107,595 doses of Covid-19 vaccines and that 20,623,815 jabs have been administered. 14,318,348 people have now received at least one jab, representing 30.2% of the population. 6,502,978 people have now been fully vaccinated, which is 13.7% of the population.
