CORONAVIRUS in SPAIN – latest Health Ministry figures
The latest official figure released by the Spanish Health Ministry on Wednesday 28 April for the number of people who have tested positive for Coronavirus since the start of the pandemic is now 3,504,799. This is an overall increase of 8,665 against the figure released on Tuesday, and of which 4,381 have occurred in the past 24 hours. There has not been a full update of figures from the Basque Country today.
Tuesday had seen an overall increase of 7,665 cases over Monday, of which 4,420 occurred in 24 hours. The peak of recorded infections for a 24-hour period during this ‘third wave’ of the pandemic in Spain was on 21 January, when 18,504 cases were registered. During the ‘first wave’, it was on 31 March when 9,222 cases were registered.
The overall incidence rate has dropped for a second consecutive day to 230.27 per 100,000 inhabitants for the past 14 days. On Tuesday it was 232.86 and on Monday 235.59. It is above the ‘extreme risk’ level in seven regions: the Basque Country (485), Madrid (393), Navarra (354), Catalonia (288), La Rioja (280), Aragón (275) and Cantabria (250). It remains under 100 in just four regions: Valencia (44), the Balearic Islands (58), Murcia (70) and Galicia (99).
There have now been 109,264 cases of Coronavirus detected in the past 14 days – out of the total 3,504,799. The figure for the past 7 days is 51,308.
There are currently 9,985 people requiring hospital treatment for Covid-19 in Spain, of which 2,316 are in intensive care. This represents 22.99% occupation of intensive care units (ICUs) by Covid-19 patients across Spain.
The official figure for the total number of Coronavirus-related deaths on Wednesday 28 April is now 77,943 – an increase of 88 over the figures released on Tuesday.
The highest increase of deaths for a 24-hour period during this ‘third wave’ in Spain was on 9 February when 766 were registered. The peak of deaths during the ‘second wave’ was on 24 November when 537 were registered. During the ‘first wave’ it was on 2 April when 950 were registered.
Increase in infections per region
Of the 4,381 new infections to have only been registered in the past 24 hours on Wednesday 28 April, the numbers per region are as follows:
- 2,084 in Madrid (last 24 hour increase was 1,808)
- 368 in Aragón (297)
- 359 in Castilla y León (383)
- 263 in Andalusia (145)
- 255 in Catalonia (181)
- 156 in Navarra (130)
- 130 in the Canary Islands (158)
- 124 in the Valencia Region (47)
- 101 in Galicia (69)
- 99 in Asturias (83)
- 89 in Cantabria (132)
- 81 in Extremadura (71)
- 70 in Murcia (70)
- 66 in La Rioja (51)
- 49 in Castilla La Mancha (31)
- 28 in the Balearic Islands (32)
- 24 in the Basque Country (710) – figures not fully updated today
- 10 in Ceuta (10)
- 25 in Melilla (12)

Covid-19 Vaccinations in Spain
Latest figures (up to 28 April) show that Spain has received 17,465,205 doses of Covid-19 vaccines and that 15,377,862 jabs have been administered. 11,261,171 people have now received at least one jab, representing 23.7% of the population. 4,166,758 people have now been fully vaccinated, which is 8.8% of the population. ‘State of Alarm’ – current restrictions across Spain
Spain has a current State of Alarm in place until 9 May 2021 and the government has recently said that it will not be extending it further beyond that date. The State of Alarm was initially declared last October to enable the regional governments the legal requirements to impose and enforce nighttime curfews and other restrictions, where required.
The Spanish Health Ministry imposed a perimeter closure for each region of Spain during the Easter period, in order to prevent ‘national tourism’. After 9 April, each region has returned to applying its own measures, in line with powers granted under the State of Alarm.
