CORONAVIRUS in SPAIN – latest Health Ministry figures

The latest official figure released by the Spanish Health Ministry on Tuesday 6 April for the number of people who have tested positive for Coronavirus since the start of the pandemic is now 3,317,948. This is an overall increase of 6,623 against the figure released on Monday, of which 4,103 have occurred in the past 24 hours.

Monday had seen an overall increase of 10,360 against the figure released on Saturday, with 2,247 in 24 hours. No figures were released on Good Friday. The peak of recorded infections for a 24-hour period during this ‘third wave’ of the pandemic in Spain was on 21 January, when 18,504 cases were registered. During the ‘first wave’, it was on 31 March when 9,222 cases were registered.

The incidence rate is now 164.71 per 100,000 inhabitants for the past 14 days, still over the ‘high-risk’ threshold. On Monday it was 163.37 and on Saturday 151.79. The incidence rate is at its highest in Navarra (363), Madrid (287) and the Basque Country (272). It remains under 100 in just four regions: the Balearic Islands, Valencia, Galicia and Murcia.

There have now been 78,154 cases of Coronavirus detected in the past 14 days – out of the total 3,317,948. The figure for the past 7 days is 36,174.

There are currently 9,463 people requiring hospital treatment for Covid-19 in Spain, of which 1,990 are in intensive care. This represents 19.92% occupation of intensive care units (ICUs) by Covid-19 patients across Spain.

The official figure for the total number of Coronavirus-related deaths on Tuesday 6 April is now 75,911 – an increase of 128 over the figures released on Monday.

The highest increase of deaths for a 24-hour period during this ‘third wave’ in Spain was on 9 February when 766 were registered. The peak of deaths during the ‘second wave’ was on 24 November when 537 were registered. During the ‘first wave’ it was on 2 April when 950 were registered.

Increase in infections per region

Of the 4,103 new infections to have only been registered in the past 24 hours on Tuesday 6 April, the numbers per region are as follows:

  • 1,930 in Madrid (last 24 hour increase was 416)
  • 395 in the Basque Country (470)
  • 393 in Castilla y León (210)
  • 227 in Aragón (124)
  • 194 in the Canary Islands (106)
  • 186 in Andalusia (107)
  • 177 in Navarra (175)
  • 96 in Asturias (95)
  • 93 in Catalonia (122) 
  • 83 in Extremadura (45)
  • 72 in Murcia (23)
  • 57 in Cantabria (40)
  • 38 in Galicia (57)
  • 33 in the Valencia Region (73)
  • 23 in Castilla La Mancha (22)
  • 22 in La Rioja (37)
  • 14 in the Balearic Islands (21)
  • 35 in Ceuta (31)
  • 35 in Melilla (26)

Covid-19 Vaccinations in Spain

Latest figures (up to 6 April) show that Spain has received 11,909,475 doses of Covid-19 vaccines and that 9,021,0017 jabs have been administered. 2,902,291 people have now received a second jab, representing 6.1% of the population. ‘State of Alarm’ – Easter restrictions across Spain

Spain has a current State of Alarm in place until 9 May 2021. The State of Alarm was initially declared last October to enable the regional governments the legal requirements to impose and enforce nighttime curfews and other restrictions, where required.

Covid-19 test requirements for travellers arriving to Spain

Spain has lifted its travel ban on arrivals from the UK. The suspension on arrivals from Brazil and South Africa remains in place until 13 April. Full report here: Spain lifts suspension of arrivals from the UK

Travellers arriving in Spain from high-risk countries have to show proof of a negative PCR test done within 72 hours of arrival. A negative result from a TMA (Transcription-Mediated Amplification test) is now also valid, ‘and other tests based on equivalent molecular techniques’.
