CORONAVIRUS in SPAIN – latest Health Ministry figures
The latest official figure released by the Spanish Health Ministry on Monday 22 March for the number of people who have tested positive for Coronavirus since the start of the pandemic is now 3,228,803. This is an overall increase of 16,471 against the figure released on Thursday, with the ministry claiming that 1,318 have occurred in the past 24 hours. No figures were released on Friday due to the San José holiday in seven regions of Spain.
Thursday had seen an overall increase of 6,216 cases of Covid-19 over Wednesday, with 3,090 in 24 hours. The peak of recorded infections for a 24-hour period during the ‘third wave’ of the pandemic in Spain was on 21 January, when 18,504 cases were registered. During the ‘first wave’, it was on 31 March when 9,222 cases were registered.
The incidence rate of new cases of Covid-19 is now 128.71 per 100,000 inhabitants for the past 14 days, rising very slightly for the third consecutive time. On Thursday it was 128.17 and last Wednesday 127.91. It remains under 100 in eight regions. It is at its lowest in the Valencia region (31), followed by the Balearic Islands (47), Murcia (56), Castilla La Mancha (74), Galicia (76), La Rioja (80), Extremadura (84) and Cantabria (97).
There have now been 60,528 cases of Coronavirus detected in the past 14 days – out of the total 3,228,803. The figure for the past 7 days is 29,404.
There are currently 8,010 people requiring hospital treatment for Covid-19 in Spain, of which 1,935 are in intensive care. This represents 19.54% occupation of intensive care units (ICUs) by Covid-19 patients across Spain.
The official figure for the total number of Coronavirus-related deaths on Monday 22 March is now 73,543 – an increase of 633 since Thursday.
The highest increase of deaths for a 24-hour period during this ‘third wave’ in Spain was on 9 February when 766 were registered. The peak of deaths during the ‘second wave’ was on 24 November when 537 were registered. During the ‘first wave’ it was on 2 April when 950 were registered.
Increase in infections per region
Of the 1,318 new infections claimed by the Health Ministry to have only been registered in the past 24 hours on Monday 22 March, the numbers per region are as follows:
- 278 in the Basque Country (last 24 hour increase was 339)
- 238 in Madrid (1,253)
- 152 in the Canary Islands (212)
- 101 in Castilla y León (227)
- 75 in Andalusia (124)
- 66 in Navarra (70)
- 65 in Catalonia (183)
- 61 in Asturias (130)
- 54 in Extremadura (70)
- 54 in the Valencia Region (41)
- 43 in Galicia (78)
- 40 in Aragón (113)
- 20 in Murcia (45)
- 16 in Cantabria (50)
- 15 in La Rioja (17)
- 14 in the Balearic Islands (31)
- 10 in Castilla La Mancha (29)
- 5 in Ceuta (34)
- 11 in Melilla (44)

Covid-19 Vaccinations in Spain
Spain will start to administer the AstraZeneca vaccine against Covid-19 again from this Wednesday 24 March. The country will also extend the use of the AstraZeneca vaccine for up to 65 year olds, it has been announced.
Latest figures (up to 22 March) show that Spain has received 7,684,265 doses of Covid-19 vaccines and that 6,321,908 jabs have been administered. 2,110,868 people have now received a second jab, representing 4.5% of the population. ‘State of Alarm’ – Easter restrictions across Spain
Spain has a current State of Alarm in place until 9 May 2021. The State of Alarm was initially declared last October to enable the regional governments the legal requirements to impose and enforce nighttime curfews and other restrictions, where required.
The Spanish Health Ministry has confirmed the perimeter closure for each region of Spain during the Easter period, in order to prevent ‘national tourism’. The measures apply to all mainland Spain; the Balearic Islands and Canary Islands are exempt from the restrictions. Covid-19 test requirements for travellers arriving to Spain
Spain has again extended its travel ban on arrivals from the UK, as well as from Brazil and South Africa in order to combat the new variants of Covid-19. Also, travellers arriving in Spain from high-risk countries have to show proof of a negative PCR test done within 72 hours of arrival. A negative result from a TMA (Transcription-Mediated Amplification test) is now also valid, ‘and other tests based on equivalent molecular techniques’.
