CORONAVIRUS in SPAIN – latest figures
The latest official figures released by the Spanish Health Ministry on Wednesday 3 June show a total of 27,128 deaths from Coronavirus in Spain – an increase of 1 in the past 24 hours. There have now been 63 deaths in the past 7 days, however.
Tuesday’s figures had not shown any increase in deaths for a second consecutive day, and 34 deaths in the past 7 days. Monday had not shown any increase in deaths in 24 hours, and 35 deaths in the past 7 days.
The current peak of recorded deaths related to Coronavirus in a 24-hour period in Spain was on 2 April, when 950 deaths were registered.
The figures released by Spain’s central Health Ministry on Wednesday come on the same day that Spain’s National Statistics Institute (INE) has published figures showing that the number of deaths for the first 21 weeks of 2020 in Spain are 24% higher than for the same period in 2019 – based on information received from the country’s civil registries (1 January to 24 May). The number of deaths during this period for 2020 is 43,945 higher than in 2019.
The INE report of its latest statistics also states that the week between 30 March and 5 April saw the highest number of deaths in the year, ‘with 20,575 deaths, 154.6% higher than the same week in 2019′. During the week of 18 May – the last week included in the study – an estimated 7,470 people died, which is ‘a similar figure to the 7,429 from the same week in 2019′.
Salvador Illa, the Spanish Health Minister, has perviously said that, ‘Spain is following a very strict definition of cases [both for deaths and infections of Coronavirus] in line with international authorities, including the World Health Organization (WHO) and the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC). Anyone who tests positive for Covid-19 and then dies is considered a Coronavirus fatality.’

The official figure released by the Health Ministry on Wednesday 3 June for the total number of people who have tested positive for Coronavirus only through a PCR test is now 240,326 – an increase of 219 over Tuesday.
Out of the 219 new confirmed cases, 112 are in Madrid.
Tuesday’s figure for the increase of infections only through PCR testing had been 137 over Monday. Monday’s figure had been 71 over Sunday – the lowest daily increase since 5 March. Sunday had been 96.
The current peak of recorded infections for a 24-hour period in Spain was on 31 March, when 9,222 new cases were registered (including from PCR and antibody).

Spanish Congress voting to extend ‘state of alarm’
Today, Wednesday 3 June, the Spanish Congress is debating and holding a vote on the sixth and final extension of the ‘state of alarm’ until 21 June.

Health Workers to receive Award
Spanish health workers on the front line against Covid-19, have been awarded the 2020 Princess of Asturias Award for Concord.
The health workers in direct contact with patients affected by Coronavirus ‘have demonstrated a commendable level of professionalism and commitment since the commencement of this healthcare emergency’, the Foundation for the Princess of Asturias Awards stated in a communication on Wednesday.
The workers have been ‘exposed to a high, aggressive viral load, in the face of long working hours, sometimes without suitable equipment or material means, according to complaints from professional and trade union organisations in this sector’, the statement continued, and ‘their unconditional dedication represents an exercise in exemplary citizenship and in their vocation to serve’.
‘With an outstanding spirit of personal sacrifice in support of public health and the well-being of society as a whole, they have become a symbol of the fight against the greatest global pandemic that has afflicted humanity in the last century,’ it said.
The Concord award is the first of eight Asturias Awards in what is its 40th edition. There will also be awards for the Arts, Communication and Humanities, Social Sciences, Sports, Literature, Technical and Scientific Research, and International Cooperation.
