Although it has been an option on the table for many years, the Sitges Town Council has finally decided to rule out the relocation of the Pia School.
The option had involved an exchange between the current land of the school, owned by the Cultural Foundation, and a publicly owned area in the La Plana area. The move had been called for by both the foundation and the school itself, but given the difficulties involved in the operation, the local council has decided definitively on the remodelling of the school’s current building instead.
According to Town Planning Councillor Eduard Terrado, the decision was taken after a meeting with the Catalan government’s General Directorate of Town Planning, which pointed out that this exchange would not meet the standards required for public facilities. Terrado also pointed out that with the remodelling of the current building, ‘everything will go faster’ and the procedures can be carried out immediately.
The director of the school, Ramon Beringues, welcomed the planned remodelling of the current building due to the difficulties involved in relocating. He said that the Pia School had already believed this option was the ‘most viable’, although not the ‘most liked’. Beringues highlighted the ‘good location’ of the current school, which is in the centre of town and very near the train station. The Pia School had already presented a preliminary project for the improvement of the current school last summer.
The school principal also stated that ‘now we are negotiating with the Foundation the conditions for the reform’. The board of trustees of the Cultural Foundation, however, that owns the building, has always demanded the move. They feel ‘disappointed’ and say they still ‘don’t rule it out’. The Foundation says that conversations should now be opened with everyone, and claim ‘it is not clear’ that remodelling is the fastest way.
