Possible event to be held in Sitges prior to the America’s Cup postponed

The event that Sitges was planning to host prior to and linked to the America’s Cup, will finally not take place. At least not on the date initially thought, which had been scheduled for the beginning of June this year.

The Sitges Town Council, local entities and the organisation of the nautical event are negotiating the possibility of transferring this event, in which female team sailors will compete, to the month of September.

The reason for the postponement is due to the calendar, since the teams that were supposed to compete, ultimately cannot make it compatible with other commitments.

The 37th edition of the America’s Cup will be held in Barcelona between August and October 2024. The city will be the first venue ever to host both an Olympic Games and an America’s Cup yachting event.

The local council and entities (Club Nàutic, Port de Sitges and Gremi d’Hostaleria) have been working for months for the town to organise complementary activities for the America’s Cup, which is considered one of the world’s most important sporting events with major media impact.

A ‘protocol of intent’ was even signed – with a confidentiality agreement included – between the council and the Catalan sailing team, Sail Team BCN, to host secondary events of the America’s Cup.

At a council plenary last week it was agreed to consider these events parallel to the America’s Cup as ‘events of general interest’. The initiative, presented by the municipal government, prospered with the vote in favour of all the groups, except Guanyem and Comun Verds, who voted against.
