The traditional Barcelona-Sitges International Classic Car Rally has paid tribute to the well-known oval racetrack of the Autòdrom Terramar as the theme for its 65th edition’s poster, and it coincides with the centenary celebration of the historic track.
This year’s vintage car rally celebrations from Barcelona to Sitges will take place on 11-12 March.
The connection of the Terramar racetrack with Sitges goes back to the very start of the project. Inaugurated on 28 October 1923, the idea to construct it came from various meetings held by motor enthusiasts at the Sitges Club de Mar. Personalities such as the pilot Frederic ‘Frick’ Armangué, the architect Jaume Mestres and the businessman Francesc Armengol – adopted son of Sitges – among others, made it possible for the circuit to become a reality, and in just 300 days of construction.
Thanks to the fact that the races on the circuit lasted for a relatively short time and that for decades its facilities were used for agricultural activity, the layout remains unchanged and the original track has been preserved. There are even tyre marks on some sections, due to vehicles using the circuit before the concrete had fully hardened.
The cars that appear on the 65th rally’s poster this year also reflect the aesthetics of the racing cars of the time, especially the Sunbeam with which the French pilot Albert Divo won the first race held at the autòdrom, which was the First International Grand Prix of Spain.
The L’illa Diagonal shopping centre in Barcelona will once again be holding an exhibition of some of the vehicles that will participate in this year’s rally. The exhibition can be visited from Monday to Saturday, 9.30am to 9pm, from 28 February until 11 March.
