Sitges Mayor: ‘Vallcarca is an economic and environmental opportunity’

The Mayor of Sitges, Aurora Carbonell, has expressed her support in a recent interview with L’Eco for the plans to turn the surroundings of the Vallcarca cement factory, just outside Sitges and currently disused, into an international, high profile technological city. ALSO READ: Ambitious plans to turn Vallcarca near Sitges into an international ‘tech city’.

Carbonell described the project as ‘an economic and environmental opportunity to reform a currently degraded place’. She pointed out that ‘of the 49 hectares of industrial land in the space, 19 are occupied. We want to reduce them to 15 and change them from a heavy industry like cement to a clean industry like knowledge and audiovisual’.

She also added that ‘the remaining 34 hectares will be a natural space that will recover the Garraf Park. We have a motorway, train, a port, tourism … It can be a very important hub not only for Sitges, but for Catalonia as a whole’.

In the same interview, the mayor also expressed her support for the citizens to decide the future of the current Aiguadolç camp, following the project of the local tourism councillor, Luismi García, to turn it into an international convention centre. Carbonell said that ‘it is a very attractive place, with significant potential, and the decision cannot be taken lightly. What I am very clear about is that there should be a parking lot’.
