Ambitious plans to turn Vallcarca near Sitges into an international ‘tech city’

An ambitious macro project is currently being developed that aims to turn the surroundings of the Vallcarca cement factory, just outside Sitges and currently disused, into an international, high profile technological city.

The project would see the construction of a centre that could attract around 4,000 qualified workers in new technologies, as well as a university campus and a large data centre, linked to a river park – recovering the original Vallcarca stream, that would flow to the beach. The project also plans to include a connection point for underwater digital cables with Asia and Africa.

Behind the initiative are some notable investors, including the ‘Fomento de Contratas y Construcciones’ and other companies. The Sitges mayor, Aurora Carbonell, had already dropped a hint at the last Rethink Sitges conference in May this year and organised by L’Eco de Sitges, when she talked about creating a ‘technological district’ in Vallcarca.

The project has reportedly already been developed and is currently in the final stages of carrying out the administrative and urban planning procedures.
