Abolition of two kindergaten classroom streams in Ribes provokes a dispute

The Catalan Department of Education has announced that, for the next school year, two kindergarten classroom streams will be abolished in Sant Pere de Ribes. Specifically, one at Escola Riera, in Ribes, and the other at Escola Santa Eulàlia, in Les Roquetes.

This is a decision that the Penedès Territorial Education Services argue is being made to avoid segregation in the different educational centres, after studying the registration data, which they say shows a decrease in the number of children due to the low birth rate.

But the decision has been unanimously rejected by the affected schools, who consider that the correct data has not been taken into account and that it will mean ‘a cut in quality’.

The Penedès Territorial Education Services say that deleting the two classroom streams has been done to limit the oversupply of places, which generates school segregation. ‘Our job is to adjust the number of places to the number of students there, guaranteeing that everyone has a public place in their municipality, but preventing them from running out,’ said its director, Pilar Rodríguez.

However, the schools claim that the deletion is detrimental to educational quality, inclusion and their educational project, and that, in addition, ‘live enrollment’ has not been taken into account.

‘We are a municipality with a very high enrollment of students who come in the middle of the year, which is not being contemplated. As the year goes on, students will be signing up, and the ratio will be exceeded,’ said Elena Ferrer, teacher at Escola Riera.
