Having positively assessed the proposals of the Coastal Management Board presented in its second meeting, the Sitges Town Council is to prioritise action against the increasing erosion of Bassa Rodona beach.
The Coastal Management Board brings together representatives of the town council, the Hospitality Guild, the Save the Beaches platform, environmental organisations and other citizens, as well as the participation of those responsible for coasts, ports and the environmental service of Vilanova i la Geltrú. Whilst priority and urgent action has been agreed for the Bassa Rodona beach, it was stressed that these will be ‘specific and extraordinary actions’ to avoid affecting that area’s habitat.
The local councillor for environmental action and ecological transition, Carme Gasulla Blanco, said: ‘The commitment of the Sitges municipal government to coastal management is clear. We have opened a dialogue between various parties and we are already agreeing on specific actions for emergency situations.’
She said that ‘at the Coastal Management Board everyone is listened to and we are being able to prioritise actions. Beaches are natural spaces that are suffering from climate change and human action over the years’.
In addition to the action in Bassa Rodona, the second priority action of the board is the monitoring of Sant Sebastià beach. The beach will have a ‘weekly photographic control’ and an analysis of the height of the sand near the wall, to be able to evaluate its evolution.
The council has scheduled meetings with the Catalan coastal department in order to work both in the short and long term on a comprehensive project for the management of the Sitges coastline. The Coastal Management Board will meet again soon to monitor the action plan in Bassa Rodona and the measures that can be taken in case of emergency.
