A surge in respiratory viruses, but local health centres are managing to cope

Cases of colds, flu and Covid have been spreading throughout Catalonia in recent weeks, including in Sitges and Sant Pere de Ribes.

The local Primary Care centres have confirmed that they’ve seen an increase in patient demand, as has the Hospital Sant Camil, although they have also said there has not been a collapse in the healthcare system at any time, and they have been able to cope.

The incidence of cases is expected to increase in the coming weeks, however, which has meant the health professionals have called for more prevention and also for increased vaccination. The wearing of face masks, for example, became compulsory for all patients and vistors to hospitals and health centres from last Wednesday 10 January.

Cases of acute respiratory infections have increased in the last four weeks. With data from the Department of Health of the Penedès municipalities, in the first week of January – the last updated – there were 4,385 cases, 10.3% more than the previous week. Data that equates to a rate of 921 per 100,000 inhabitants, far from the peak at the beginning of 2022, in the midst of the sixth wave of Covid, but above last year’s figures – which at this date was 637.
