Sitges toll charge for the Garraf tunnels now exceeds 8 euros

The toll charge for the Garraf Tunnels now exceeds 8 euros, after the 3.3% increase that came into force on 1 January 2024. Specifically, it is 8.04 euros per one-way journey, although drivers can also benefit from up to a 50% discount for continued use from Monday to Friday. Up until 31 December, the price was 7.79 euros.

The new cost is the highest that the Garraf toll has seen since its inauguration in 1992, and it continues to place it as one of the most expensive in the whole of Spain. The 3.3% increase is in line with the increase in the Consumer Price Index (CPI), which in November was 3.2%. However, during 2023, the motorway concessionaire applied prices higher than the CPI increase of a year ago: on 1 January 2023, the toll rose by 7.3%, while the CPI at the end of 2022 had fallen to 5.7%.

The increase that came into force on 1 January 2024 was announced by the Catalan Government three weeks ago, who also made public the increase in the discount from 70 to 75% for vehicles that travel daily through the Cubelles toll booth.

The Mayor of Sitges, Aurora Carbonell, believes that ‘the increase in the toll represents a grievance towards the citizens of Sitges and local businesses’. She said that ‘despite the established discount policy, it is clear that the Vallcarca toll is very high and punishes the people and businesses of the town and puts us at a disadvantage compared to other parts of the country’.

The president of the Garraf Regional Council, Mònica Gallardo, also spoke out against the increase, stating that ‘we are not satisfied with the price, nor with the treatment received’, and said she was dismayed by ‘the fait accompli policy of the department’. Before the last municipal elections, different parties spoke out against the toll increase, but without obtaining any results for the residents of the Garraf region.
