‘Models of Beauty’ – a new exhibition at the Maricel Museum in Sitges

A new temporary exhibition is opening at the Maricel Museum in Sitges – ‘Models of Beauty – the old museum of art reproductions’, which occupies the ground floor of the building.

Running from 16 December until 13 October 2024, the exhibition is curated by Ignasi Domènech, head of Collections of the Consortium of Sitges Heritage.

The origin of the exhibition goes back to the year 1891 when, faced with the impact of the Universal Exhibition of 1888 and cultural events at the time, Barcelona inaugurated the ‘Museum of Artistic Reproductions’ with the aim of displaying reproduced examples of the history of art from various periods.

From today’s perspective, and where there is a tendency to appreciate original works, it should be noted that in the 19th century, reproduction copies had a very specific value and function. Artistically, they were appreciated because they were made by professional sculptors with great detail and quality. They were also considered a good method for Fine Arts students to learn about the artistic trends of the past and be inspired by them.
