Sitges is 3rd town with most criminal offences per population size in Catalonia

Sitges is the third town with the most criminal offences in relation to population size in Catalonia, among municipalities with more than 20,000 inhabitants.

This is the conclusion of the Ministry of Interior’s crime report for the first half of this year. This is a rate of 52.3 incidents known to the police for every 1,000 inhabitants. Thefts represent 45% of these crimes, and have increased by 49% compared to the same period of the previous year; on the other hand, serious crimes are residual and have decreased.

However, it should be noted that the data represents ‘per census inhabitants’, while Sitges receives 3 million visitors each year, according to the data.

The municipality is in third place on the podium, behind Prat de Llobregat, with 64.3 infringements per 1,000 inhabitants – although all events that happen at the airport are included in this population – and Barcelona, with 54.9.

This trend in the data has continued like this in recent years: Sitges, Prat de Llobregat and Barcelona – along with Sant Adrià del Besòs and Salou – are always in the top five. According to the Sitges Local Police and the Town Council, the results can be explained by tourism.
