In just five days, the Garraf region has gone from the highest level of fire risk alert to one of the lowest. The combination of rainfall and a decrease in the intense heat has prompted this shift in the indicators on the Catalan government’s ‘Plan Alfa’ map.
On Wednesday and Thursday of last week during the town’s Festa Major, Sitges and the entire Garraf area were under the highest level of alert, which included a complete ban on fires and restricted access to certain areas.
The Catalan government issued an order allowing for a special exception in Sitges itself, permitting the traditional ‘carrefoc’ firecrackers and ‘fire castles’ to be conducted by the ‘colles de foc’ groups. However, other restrictions remained in place.
The heavy rain that fell on Saturday and Sunday, however, has changed the situation – at least for now. El Garraf is now on Level 1 of the four on the Plan Alfa map (the fourth would be the access restriction, which is what was in place last week).
Part of the counties of the Ebro and the south of Terres de Lleida are at Level 2, while the northern half of Catalonia is at Level Zero.
