Sitges Town Council to strengthen security control in nightlife sector

Sitges Town Council has announced the creation of a ‘nightlife working group’ made up of representatives from all relevant sectors, including from the council itself, security forces and nightlife venues, with the aim of a better monitoring of the sector and improved security.

A special unit will be also implemented with more police presence of a preventive nature, particularly on days when there is a greater influx of people.

In parallel, specific areas of night entertainment will also have video surveillance cameras in the future, as a deterrent measure, and as previously announced by the local council. In addition, before the end of the year, a ‘security app’ will be launched that will allow citizens to quickly contact the police in the event of any emergency.

The measures were presented on Tuesday after a meeting to address the events that took place on Saturday in the Carrer Primer Maig in Sitges. ALSO READ: A mass brawl in Sitges leaves police officer injured.

The meeting was attended by the mayor of Sitges, Aurora Carbonell; the governor councillor, David Martinez; councillor for tourism, Brandon Jones; the Inspector of the Local Police, Jordi Altarriba; the deputy chief of the southern metropolitan region of the Mossos d’Esquadra, Amadeu Domingo; and Chief Inspector ABP Garraf, Josep Maria Montero.

Carbonell wanted to ‘reject and condemn the events that took place on Saturday night’ and expressed ‘all the support for the night entertainment sector … and for the security forces who carried out a quick action’.

She also thanked the behaviour of the ‘citizens who were in the area and who had to suffer a situation as complicated as the one they did’. She stressed that ‘Sitges is an open, cosmopolitan, welcoming and above all safe town, and it is thanks to joint work’.

The deputy chief of the southern metropolitan region of the Mossos d’Esquadra, Amadeu Domingo, said that ‘Sitges maintains normal levels of crime’ and reiterated that ‘Saturday’s case was a very specific [one-off] event’.

Regarding the patrols, Domingo said that ‘it is about applying a more active police presence – with visible and preventive patrolling – also incorporating a closer relationship with the security or access control personnel of the leisure establishments’.

The Inspector of the Sitges Local Police said that ‘the new app, which will be free, would be available in different languages and can be put into operation in a couple of months, once all the administrative procedures have been completed’.
