Art Galleries of Catalunya’s ‘GAC Awards’

The GAC Awards are organised by the association Galeries d’Art de Catalunya and were held recently at the Macba, as part of the Gallery Night, which was attended by nearly 300 guests, including the Catalan government’s minister of culture, Natàlia Garriga.

The GAC Awards recognise both established and emerging talent, and the list of winners of the 16th edition presented a complete and diverse portrait of the visual arts and art galleries in Catalonia today.

The awards honoured figures with a long career, such as Eulàlia Grau, Pepa Quinteiro, Colita, Jordi Gimferrer and Marga Perera, along with others established (Toni Giró, Jorge Satorre) and emerging (Daniela Ortiz), in addition to the galleries Cadaqués and Artur Ramon Art.

During the event, the president of the Awards Committee and new president of the Art Galleries of Catalonia association, Benito Padilla, said ‘it is necessary to make art visible in all areas of life in its most diverse meanings, to embed it in the landscape. Because if we think about the future, there is no future without life, and to the extent that art is life, there is no future without art’.

The Catalan culture minister, Natàlia Garriga, said: ‘Galleries have a series of challenges ahead of them that have been occupying you for a few years, such as, for example, that everyone feels invited to enter your spaces, and that art has more buyers. These challenges have made you rethink. Starting from a very important artistic and gallery tradition, like the one we have in Catalonia, you offer ideas and projects of great quality, and focused on the public. I want to take advantage, therefore, to highlight the great work that all of you are doing here this room, and to especially congratulate all the award winners tonight. Congratulations to one and all.’
