Sitges Plenary approves special commission to investigate alleged irregularities

An extraordinary municipal plenary session recently held by Sitges Town Council has approved the creation of a special commission to investigate the alleged irregularities in the subsidies granted to the ‘Taula del Tercer Sector’ entity of Sitges-Garraf.

Also approved was the presentation as a private accusation of the town council in this case, which remains open.

The plenary session, which had been convened by the Junts per Sitges party and the PSC-Margalló group, was fraught with tension between the members of the different parties.

The issue relates to investigating the process of subsidies granted by the Sitges Town Council to the social entity ‘Taula del Tercer Sector’ and which resulted in the Spanish National Police and officers of their Economic and Fiscal Crime Unit (UDEF) carrying out several searches in Sitges and temporarily detaining councillors on 21 June, including the mayor. The extraordinary plenum, which was held after the Plenary of the Cartipàs, began with the departure from the chamber of the mayor, Aurora Carbonell, and the councillor Jaume Monasterio, who had both been detained and questioned in the case on the orders of the Court number 8 of Vilanova i la Geltrú last month.

The Plenary approved the creation of the investigation commission and the appointment of the town council to act as a private accuser in the case. Before the debate on the proposals, however, the local government had presented an amendment which was not taken forward as it did not obtain the necessary votes.
