With the month of June now over, the local tourism sector has made its initial assessment of what this summer could look like in terms of occupancy and spending by tourists visiting Sitges during the months of July and August.
The sector acknowledges that there has been a slowdown in bookings compared to the high expectations from the earlier months of the year, which has led to a reduction in optimism for this summer. However, the Sitges Hospitality Guild (Gremi d’Hostaleria de Sitges) believes that it could still be a good summer for the sector.
The meeting of the governing board of the Guild, held on the afternoon of 20 June, served to take stock and analyse the data for the first half of the year and the projected trend for the summer. The increases in interest rates and the resulting financial cost have deterred some foreign visitors, and the overall cost of supplies and the high cost of flights have contributed to a recent slowdown in bookings for the summer.
Nevertheless, the Guild has given a very positive assessment of the first half of 2023, and Oskar Stöber, the president of the organisation, said that it has been ‘a strong first semester that has exceeded expectations’.
However, the Guild is aware that the main bulk of economic activity in tourism in Sitges is focused on its stronger months, spanning from June to September, and they are relying on last-minute bookings to achieve a good occupancy rate and spending figures.
