Sitges considering ‘seasonal taxi licences’ to reduce waiting times

The taxi situation in Sitges has not improved, and the arrival of the high tourist season is imminent.

The current 37 licences are sufficient during the winter, but when there are business conventions and conferences being held, or weekends with good weather and, above all, during the summer itself, it is quickly evident that the service can’t cope with the demand.

Whilst the problem is obvious, the local administrations, entities and the taxi sector have not yet agreed on how to resolve this situation, especially during the months with high employment in the town.

The Sitges Town Council and the Sitges Taxi Association are due to meet to find solutions. On the table is the option of granting seasonal licences, since the council has powers to issue these types of temporary permits.

The problem with seasonal licences is that each licence is associated with a vehicle, and the investment of a car is too high to be able to use it only for a few months. This measure, however, does not currently have the approval of taxi drivers, who in the past have opposed any granting of new licences.
