Cinema returns to the Retiro theatre in Sitges

The Retiro has been screening films again since last weekend, and is doing so in a big way, with the premiere of the second part of Avatar, currently considered the most expensive production in history.

This has been possible after an understanding between the venue and Cine Club Sitges. Although the Retiro has planned a comprehensive refurbishment of its theatre hall, the works will be delayed a little longer than planned and will not start until after Carnival.

The fact that the Prado cinema, due to a series of circumstances, could not host the premiere of Avatar, and taking into account that it already has an established film programme, means that the Retiro has become, temporarily, a complementary cinema again.

Owen John Holden, one of the managers of Cine Club Sitges, said that ‘programming in the two theatres will allow Sitges to have a film offer for different types of audiences without entering into competition’.

The return of cinema to the Retiro is also part of the objective of the venue’s new strategy, to provide a space for all types of cultural activity once the refurbishment works are finished. The space will become an auditorium designed for all kinds of events, and will also be available to rent out for conferences and conventions. However, it will still also be used for screenings from time to time, as is the case with the current agreement.
