Second death on Sitges beaches in 48 hours due to cardio-respiratory arrest

A 75-year-old man from Sitges sadly died on Saturday afternoon at La Barra beach due to a cardio-respiratory arrest. This was the second death in less than 48 hours.

The man was reportedly in the water when he started to feel sick. A bather nearby saw that something out of the ordinary was happening and alerted the lifeguard, who helped him out of the water. People who were in the area called the SEM ambulance service, that sent three vehicles within minutes to the scene. Agents from the Sitges local police and the Mossos d’Esquadra were also present.

When the ambulance teams arrived, they tried to revive the man, with a number of cardio-respiratory exercises. Despite spending more than half an hour trying to resuscitate the man, it was not possible and shortly after they confirmed his death. During this time, the local police installed screens to protect their privacy.

Last Thursday evening, a 67-year-old woman of Spanish nationality died of unknown causes when she entered the sea alone at the Riera Xica beach, outside the hours of the lifeguard surveillance service.

The woman’s body was seen after 9.30pm by two young women who had entered the sea to swim. Seeing that there was a woman floating and not moving, they called for help. A man who was on the beach with his family threw himself into the water and managed to remove the body. By that time, the victim had no pulse and was visibly swollen, suggesting that she had been dead for a long time.

The Medical Emergency Service received the warning at 9.46pm and dispatched three units, which according to people who were in the area, took 25 minutes to arrive. On the sand, attempts had been made to resuscitate the woman with cardio-respiratory massage but when the SEM ambulances arrived they certified her as dead.
