Sitges Town Council has recently started a pilot trial of an electric vehicle that will be used for distributing goods to the urban core of the municipality.
The new project is a public-private collaboration between the council, Heineken and ‘Dispengar i Gestí’, companies in charge of the distribution of merchandise. The objective is to establish a new distribution model for the urban areas of the town centre that is more sustainable and efficient.
The test has started with the objective of being able to apply the system as part of a future reorganisation of the distribution of goods to the hostelry and restaurant establishments, and to improve the current ‘last-mile’ merchandise distribution system.
As reported in May last year, the aim is to set up a logistics hub on one of the main access routes to the town in order to centralise and coordinate the distribution of goods and merchandise within the centre of the town itself, using electric vehicles.
The initiative is part of the projects of sustainable mobility and energy transition that the municipal authorities will present in the European Union to request funding from the Next Generation economic recovery funds.
