The latest official figure released by the Spanish Health Ministry on Wednesday 22 December for the number of people who have tested positive for Coronavirus since the start of the pandemic is now 5,645,095. This is an overall increase of 60,041 against the figure released on Tuesday – another record increase in cases – and of which 37,609 have been registered in the past 24 hours.

Tuesday had seen an overall increase of 49,823 over Monday, of which 27,265 were registered in 24 hours.

The overall incidence rate across Spain has risen another 89 points to 784.20 per 100,000 inhabitants for the past 14 days. On Tuesday it was 695.38 and Monday 609.38. The region with the lowest incidence rate is Castilla-La Mancha at 374. It is at its highest in Navarra at 1,562. It is also over 1,000 in the Basque Country, Aragón, Castilla y León, Madrid and La Rioja. See below for the incidence rate for each region.

The age group with the highest incidence rate is those aged 20-29, at 1,180. The incidence rates per age group are as follows:

  • Aged 11 and under – 957.59 (previously 880.05)
  • 12-19 years – 619.31 (523.67)
  • 20-29 years – 1,180.11 (1,000.52)
  • 30-39 years – 1,029.34 (893.47)
  • 40-49 years – 937.59 (833.39)
  • 50-59 years – 699.33 (618.26)
  • 60-69 years – 583.03 (549.36)
  • 70-79 years – 254.16 (239.69)
  • Aged 80 and over – 209.31 (195.94)

There have now been 372,111 cases of Coronavirus detected in the past 14 days – out of the total 5,645,095. The figure for the past 7 days is 230,861

There are currently 7,732 people hospitalised for Covid-19 in Spain (previously 7,634), representing a 6.23% occupation of hospital beds across Spain (6.14%). 1,466 are in intensive care (1,472), representing 15.77% occupation of intensive care units (ICUs) by Covid patients across Spain (15.77%).

The official figure for the total number of Coronavirus-related deaths since the start of the pandemic on Wednesday 22 Dec is now 88,937 – an increase of 50 since Tuesday.

Of the 37,609 new infections to have only been registered in the past 24 hours (and current incidence rate) on Wednesday 22 Dec, the numbers per region are as follows:

  • 12,988 in Madrid (current incidence rate: 809)
  • 4,526 in Catalonia (756)
  • 3,906 in Castilla y León (1,055)
  • 3,324 in the Basque Country (1,273)
  • 2,481 in the Canary Islands (751)
  • 1,805 in Aragón (1,112)
  • 1,500 in Murcia (900)
  • 1,373 in Extremadura (640)
  • 1,197 in Galicia (627)
  • 1,114 in Navarra (1,562)
  • 868 in Asturias (818)
  • 669 in Andalusia (495)
  • 496 in Cantabria (606)
  • 470 in La Rioja (1,341)
  • 405 in the Balearic Islands (719)
  • 287 in the Valencia Region (724)
  • 72 in Castilla La Mancha (374)
  • 68 in Ceuta (954)
  • 60 in Melilla (757)

Covid-19 Vaccinations in Spain

Latest figures (with data collated up to Thursday 16 December) show that Spain has administered 82,518,671 jabs of the Covid vaccine. 37,777,929 people have now been fully vaccinated, which is 79.6% of the total population. A further 10,507,992 ‘booster’ jabs have also been administered.
