The latest official figure released by the Spanish Health Ministry on Tuesday 21 December for the number of people who have tested positive for Coronavirus since the start of the pandemic is now 5,585,054. This is an overall increase of 49,823 against the figure released on Monday – the highest since the start of the pandemic – and of which 27,265 have been registered in the past 24 hours.

Monday had seen an overall weekend increase of 79,704 over Friday, of which 9,993 were registered in 24 hours.

The overall incidence rate across Spain has risen another 86 points to 695.38 per 100,000 inhabitants for the past 14 days. On Monday it was 609.38 and Friday 511.00. The region with the lowest incidence rate is Castilla-La Mancha at 340. It is at its highest in Navarra at 1,488. It is also over 1,000 in the Basque Country, Aragón and La Rioja. The age group with the highest incidence rate is those aged 20-29, at 1,000. The incidence rates per age group are as follows:

  • Aged 11 and under – 880.05 (previously 776.74)
  • 12-19 years – 523.67 (439.92)
  • 20-29 years – 1,000.52 (854.26)
  • 30-39 years – 893.47 (766.48)
  • 40-49 years – 833.39 (724.73)
  • 50-59 years – 618.26 (528.41)
  • 60-69 years – 549.36 (494.83)
  • 70-79 years – 239.69 (216.36)
  • Aged 80 and over – 195.94 (176.46)

There have now been 329,964 cases of Coronavirus detected in the past 14 days – out of the total 5,585,054. The figure for the past 7 days is 201,225

There are currently 7,634 people hospitalised for Covid-19 in Spain (previously 7,501), representing a 6.14% occupation of hospital beds across Spain (6.03%). 1,472 are in intensive care (1,442), representing 15.77% occupation of intensive care units (ICUs) by Covid patients across Spain (15.49%).

The official figure for the total number of Coronavirus-related deaths since the start of the pandemic on Tuesday 21 Dec is now 88,887 – an increase of 94 since Monday.

Increase in infections per region & current incidence rate

Of the 27,265 new infections to have only been registered in the past 24 hours (and current incidence rate) on Tuesday 21 Dec, the numbers per region are as follows:

  • 9,368 in Madrid (current incidence rate: 809)
  • 3,505 in Catalonia (662)
  • 2,489 in the Basque Country (1,183)
  • 2,158 in Castilla y León (842)
  • 1,905 in the Canary Islands (645)
  • 1,531 in Murcia (817)
  • 1,238 in Aragón (1,019)
  • 919 in Navarra (1,488)
  • 820 in Extremadura (518)
  • 811 in Galicia (593)
  • 664 in Asturias (762)
  • 456 in La Rioja (1,163)
  • 377 in Cantabria (557)
  • 358 in Andalusia (440)
  • 285 in the Balearic Islands (673)
  • 235 in the Valencia Region (701)
  • 13 in Castilla La Mancha (340)
  • 57 in Ceuta (900)
  • 46 in Melilla (728)

Covid-19 Vaccinations in Spain

Latest figures (with data collated up to Thursday 16 December) show that Spain has administered 82,518,671 jabs of the Covid vaccine. 37,777,929 people have now been fully vaccinated, which is 79.6% of the total population. A further 10,507,992 ‘booster’ jabs have also been administered.
