The latest official figure released by the Spanish Health Ministry on Thursday 16 December for the number of people who have tested positive for Coronavirus since the start of the pandemic is now 5,422,168. This is an overall increase of 28,900 against the figure released on Wednesday, of which 17,309 have been registered in the past 24 hours.

Wednesday had seen an overall increase of 27,140 over Tuesday, of which 16,243 were registered in 24 hours.

The overall incidence rate across Spain has risen another 31 points to 472.90 per 100,000 inhabitants for the past 14 days. On Wednesday it was 441.69 and Tuesday 412.26. The region with the lowest incidence rate is Castilla-La Mancha at 220. It is at its highest in Navarra at 1,330 – followed by the Basque Country at 1,003. Six other regions (plus the autonomous cities of Ceuta and Melilla) have an incidence rate higher than 500. See below for the incidence rate for each region.

The age group with the highest incidence rate is those aged under 11, at 686. The incidence rates per age group are as follows:

  • Aged 11 and under – 686.24 (previously 666.95)
  • 12-19 years – 306.99 (275.11)
  • 20-29 years – 534.38 (452.79)
  • 30-39 years – 550.61 (500.02)
  • 40-49 years – 582.94 (550.58)
  • 50-59 years – 420.54 (397.38)
  • 60-69 years – 440.87 (427.04)
  • 70-79 years – 208.05 (208.05)
  • Aged 80 and over – 160.83 (156.99)

There have now been 224,393 cases of Coronavirus detected in the past 14 days – out of the total 5,422,168. The figure for the past 7 days is 138,262

There are currently 6,682 people hospitalised for Covid-19 in Spain (previously 6,488), representing a 5.35% occupation of hospital beds across Spain (5.20%). 1,292 are in intensive care (1,245), representing 13.92% occupation of intensive care units (ICUs) by Covid patients across Spain (13.42%).

The official figure for the total number of Coronavirus-related deaths since the start of the pandemic on Thursday 16 Dec is now 88,667 – an increase of 48 since Wednesday.

Increase in infections per region & current incidence rate

Of the 17,309 new infections to have only been registered in the past 24 hours (and current incidence rate) on Thursday 16 Dec, the numbers per region are as follows:

  • 5,200 in Madrid (current incidence rate: 391)
  • 1,939 in Castilla y León (656)
  • 1,930 in the Basque Country (1,003)
  • 1,359 in the Canary Islands (370)
  • 1,110 in Aragón (801)
  • 865 in Galicia (497)
  • 776 in Murcia (483)
  • 727 in Asturias (620)
  • 661 in Navarra (1,330)
  • 536 in Andalusia (248)
  • 498 in Extremadura (296)
  • 452 in the Valencia Region (528)
  • 320 in La Rioja (619)
  • 315 in Cantabria (418)
  • 235 in the Balearic Islands (570)
  • 76 in Catalonia (484)
  • 22 in Castilla La Mancha (220)
  • 64 in Ceuta (604)
  • 35 in Melilla (596)

Covid-19 Vaccinations in Spain

Latest figures (with data collated up to Wednesday 15 December) show that Spain has administered 82,067,448 jabs of the Covid vaccine. 37,767,016 people have now been fully vaccinated, which is 79.6% of the total population. A further 10,094,293 ‘booster’ jabs have also been administered.
