The latest official figure released by the Spanish Health Ministry on Wednesday 15 December for the number of people who have tested positive for Coronavirus since the start of the pandemic is now 5,393,268. This is an overall increase of 27,140 against the figure released on Tuesday, of which 16,243 have been registered in the past 24 hours.

Tuesday had seen an overall increase of 26,136 over Monday, of which 14,339 were registered in 24 hours.

The overall incidence rate across Spain has risen another 29 points to 441.69 per 100,000 inhabitants for the past 14 days. On Tuesday it was 412.26 and Monday 381.26. The region with the lowest incidence rate is Castilla-La Mancha at 206. It is at its highest in Navarra at 1,314. Eight regions (plus the autonomous cities of Ceuta and Melilla) have an incidence rate higher than 500. See below for the incidence rate for each region.

The age group with the highest incidence rate is those aged under 11, at 666..The incidence rates per age group are as follows:

  • Aged 11 and under – 666.95 (previously 648.64)
  • 12-19 years – 275.11 (246.33)
  • 20-29 years – 452.79 (385.73)
  • 30-39 years – 500.02 (454.77)
  • 40-49 years – 550.58 (513.98)
  • 50-59 years – 397.38 (372.37)
  • 60-69 years – 427.04 (408.81)
  • 70-79 years – 208.05 (203.58)
  • Aged 80 and over – 156.99 (151.73)

There have now been 209,587 cases of Coronavirus detected in the past 14 days – out of the total 5,393,268. The figure for the past 7 days is 121,133

There are currently 6,488 people hospitalised for Covid-19 in Spain (previously 6,373), representing a 5.20% occupation of hospital beds across Spain (5.11%). 1,245 are in intensive care (1,215), representing 13.42% occupation of intensive care units (ICUs) by Covid patients across Spain (13.10%).

The official figure for the total number of Coronavirus-related deaths since the start of the pandemic on Wednesday 15 Dec is now 88,619 – an increase of 77 since Tuesday.

Increase in infections per region & current incidence rate

Of the 16,243 new infections to have only been registered in the past 24 hours (and current incidence rate) on Wednesday 15 Dec, the numbers per region are as follows:

  • 4,141 in Madrid (current incidence rate: 321)
  • 1,930 in the Basque Country (966)
  • 1,724 in Castilla y León (604)
  • 1,686 in Catalonia (507)
  • 1,107 in the Canary Islands (324)
  • 1,022 in Aragón (772)
  • 698 in Navarra (1,314)
  • 663 in Asturias (579)
  • 555 in Galicia (471)
  • 528 in Murcia (432)
  • 504 in Andalusia (219)
  • 431 in Extremadura (258)
  • 332 in the Valencia Region (483)
  • 320 in La Rioja (546)
  • 232 in the Balearic Islands (523)
  • 194 in Cantabria (392)
  • 23 in Castilla La Mancha (206)
  • 99 in Ceuta (552)

Covid-19 Vaccinations in Spain

Latest figures (with data collated up to Monday 13 December) show that Spain has administered 81,104,962 jabs of the Covid vaccine. 37,742,102 people have now been fully vaccinated, which is 79.5% of the total population. A further 9,210,940 ‘booster’ jabs have also been administered.
