Coronavirus in Spain (9 Aug) – incidence rate falls 42 points, yet hospitalisations rise

CORONAVIRUS in SPAIN – latest Health Ministry figures

The latest official figure released by the Spanish Health Ministry on Monday 9 Aug for the number of people who have tested positive for Coronavirus since the start of the pandemic is now 4,627,770. This is an overall increase of 39,638 against the figure released on Friday, of which 3,987 have occurred in the past 24 hours.

Friday had seen an overall increase of 21,561 over Thursday, of which 10,540 occurred in 24 hours. The peak of recorded infections for a 24-hour period during the pandemic in Spain was on 21 January, when 18,504 cases were registered.

The overall incidence rate has fallen by 42 points since Friday to 549.06 per 100,000 inhabitants for the past 14 days. On Friday it was 591.14 and Thursday 614.88.

The incidence for each age group per 100,000 inhabitants for the past 14 days is as follows:

  • Under 11 – 535 (Friday was 557)
  • Aged 12-19 – 1,203 (1,315)
  • Aged 20-29 – 1,193 (1,332)
  • Aged 30-39 – 617 (682)
  • Aged 40-49 – 381 (401)
  • Aged 50-59 – 330 (342)
  • Agend 60-69 – 292 (307)
  • Aged 70-79 – 222 (222)
  • Over 80 – 293 (294)

There have now been 260,531 cases of Coronavirus detected in the past 14 days – out of the total 4,627,770. The figure for the past 7 days is 106,444

There are currently 10,411 people requiring hospital treatment for Covid-19 in Spain (10,015 on Friday), of which 2,031 are in intensive care (1,928 Friday). This represents 21.98% occupation of intensive care units (ICUs) by Covid-19 patients across Spain (20.87% Friday). It remains highest at 49% in Catalonia.

The official figure for the total number of Coronavirus-related deaths since the start of the pandemic on Monday 9 Aug is 82,125 – an increase of 119 since Friday.

Increase in infections per region

Of the 3,987 new infections to have only been registered in the past 24 hours on Monday 9 Aug, the numbers per region are as follows:

  • 541 in the Basque Country (last 24 hour increase was 944)
  • 530 in Catalonia (1,521)
  • 472 in Madrid (2,537)
  • 364 in Castilla y León (844)
  • 326 in the Canary Islands (625)
  • 318 in Galicia (700)
  • 237 in Cantabria (291)
  • 198 in Andalusia (567)
  • 197 in Aragón (592)
  • 191 in Extremadura (436)
  • 185 in Navarra (268)
  • 104 in Murcia (354)
  • 101 in Asturias (175)
  • 70 in the Balearic Islands (174)
  • 69 in La Rioja (148)
  • 28 in the Valencia Region (273)
  • 15 in Castilla La Mancha (52) 
  • 29 in Ceuta (16)
  • 12 in Melilla (23)

Covid-19 Vaccinations in Spain

Latest figures (up to 9 Aug) show that Spain has administered 59,108,679 jabs of Covid-19 vaccines. 33,424,529 people have now received at least one jab, representing 70.4% of the total population. 28,587,458 people have now been fully vaccinated, which is 60.2% of the total population.
