CORONAVIRUS in SPAIN – latest Health Ministry figures
The latest official figure released by the Spanish Health Ministry on Wednesday 21 April for the number of people who have tested positive for Coronavirus since the start of the pandemic is now 3,446,072. This is an overall increase of 10,232 against the figure released on Tuesday, and of which 5,730 have occurred in the past 24 hours.
Tuesday had seen an overall increase of 7,486 cases against Monday, of which 4,526 occurred in 24 hours. The peak of recorded infections for a 24-hour period during this ‘third wave’ of the pandemic in Spain was on 21 January, when 18,504 cases were registered. During the ‘first wave’, it was on 31 March when 9,222 cases were registered.
The overall incidence rate has dropped by one point to 229.65 per 100,000 inhabitants for the past 14 days. On Tuesday it was 230.95 and on Monday 230.54. It remains above the ‘extreme risk’ level in six regions: the Basque Country (448), Navarra (424), Madrid (400), Aragón (267), Andalusia (254) and La Rioja (252). It remains under 100 in just four regions: Valencia (40), the Balearic Islands (59), Murcia (66) and Galicia (91).
There have now been 108,973 cases of Coronavirus detected in the past 14 days – out of the total 3,446,072. The figure for the past 7 days is 51,096.
There are currently 10,108 people requiring hospital treatment for Covid-19 in Spain, of which 2,288 are in intensive care. This represents 22.68% occupation of intensive care units (ICUs) by Covid-19 patients across Spain. Before the start of the recent Easter holiday, the UCI occupation was 18.4%.
The official figure for the total number of Coronavirus-related deaths on Wednesday 21 April is now 77,364 – an increase of 148 over the figures released on Tuesday.
The highest increase of deaths for a 24-hour period during this ‘third wave’ in Spain was on 9 February when 766 were registered. The peak of deaths during the ‘second wave’ was on 24 November when 537 were registered. During the ‘first wave’ it was on 2 April when 950 were registered.
Increase in infections per region
Of the 5,730 new infections to have only been registered in the past 24 hours on Wednesday 21 April, the numbers per region are as follows:
- 2,268 in Madrid (last 24 hour increase was 1,954)
- 937 in the Basque Country (751)
- 396 in Castilla y León (342)
- 373 in Andalusia (151)
- 348 in Aragón (195)
- 263 in Catalonia (90)
- 195 in Navarra (155)
- 194 in the Canary Islands (143)
- 144 in Asturias (117)
- 110 in the Valencia Region (55)
- 108 in Galicia (57)
- 90 in Cantabria (151)
- 75 in Extremadura (99)
- 57 in Castilla La Mancha (48)
- 56 in Murcia (55)
- 45 in La Rioja (83)
- 23 in the Balearic Islands (28)
- 14 in Ceuta (13)
- 34 in Melilla (17)

Covid-19 Vaccinations in Spain
Latest figures (up to 21 April) show that Spain has received 14,916,375 doses of Covid-19 vaccines and that 13,497,809 jabs have been administered. 9,886,203 people have now received at least one jab, representing 20.8% of the population. 3,611,606 people have now received a second jab, which is 7.6% of the population. ‘State of Alarm’ – current restrictions across Spain
Spain has a current State of Alarm in place until 9 May 2021 and the government has recently said that it will not be extending it further beyond that date. The State of Alarm was initially declared last October to enable the regional governments the legal requirements to impose and enforce nighttime curfews and other restrictions, where required.
The Spanish Health Ministry imposed a perimeter closure for each region of Spain during the Easter period, in order to prevent ‘national tourism’. After 9 April, each region has returned to applying its own measures, in line with powers granted under the State of Alarm.
