The ‘Casa Bacardí’ leaves Sitges

The Casa Bacardí is leaving the Mercat Vell, the old market building in Sitges where it has been installed for the past ten years. The decision was taken in recent weeks and it affects the closure not only of the Bacardí brand’s location in Sitges, but also in other locations throughout Europe, following a strategic review by the company.

According to Bacardí, this ‘difficult decision’ has been taken as a result of the important decline of visitors generated by the restrictions of mobility imposed to cope with the Covid-19 pandemic. The Town Council and the company are looking at other possible future collaborations.

The announcement of Bacardí’s departure takes place at the same time that the Council’s culture department has presented projects of reform and for new uses of some local sites, including l’Escorxador (the old slaughterhouse) in Sitges. In the initial proposal, the old market house was also included, although it was shelved while the site was being occupied by Bacardí.
