CORONAVIRUS in SPAIN – latest Health Ministry figures

The latest official figure* released by the Spanish Health Ministry on Wednesday 25 November for the number of people who have tested positive for Coronavirus (Covid-19) since the start of the pandemic is now 1,605,066. This is an overall increase of 10,222 against the figure released on Tuesday. (Last Wednesday’s data had shown an overall increase of 19,096). The ministry claims that 5,400 of these infections have occurred in the past 24 hours (last Wednesday the figure had been 7,090 for a 24 hour period).

The overall accumulated incidence rate for Spain is now 340.83 per 100,000 inhabitants for the past 14 days (Tuesday’s figure was 362.35 and last Wednesday’s figure had been 452.57). It remains over 500, however, in four regions: Asturias (567.17), Castilla y León (596.95), the Basque Country (547.02) and La Rioja (511.05), as well as in the autonomous city of Melilla (505.28).

The peak of recorded infections for a 24-hour period during this ‘second wave’ in Spain was on 30 October, when 9,723 new cases were registered. During the ‘first wave’, it was on 31 March when 9,222 new cases were registered.

There have now been 160,280 cases of Coronavirus detected in the past 14 days – out of the total 1,605,066. The figure for the past 7 days is 61,432.

According to the latest data, the number of people currently requiring hospital treatment for Covid-19 is 15,986 across Spain – of which 2,838 are in intensive care (UCI). This currently represents a total 28.98% occupation of intensive care wards for Covid-19 patients across Spain (Tuesday’s figure was 29.06%). Hospital data could include patients who have shown symptoms of Coronavirus, but are still awaiting test results. The full data shows the numbers per region and % occupancy of UCI wards.

The official figure* for the total number of Coronavirus-related deaths on Wednesday 25 November is now 44,037 – an increase of 369 since Tuesday. Last Wednesday’s data had shown 351 deaths in 24 hours. It is now a total of 1,204 deaths in the last 7 days.

The highest increase of deaths to date for a 24-hour period during this ‘second wave’ in Spain was on 24 November when 537 were registered. The peak of recorded deaths for a 24-hour period during the ‘first wave’ was on 2 April when 950 were registered.

Increase in infections

Figures released on Tuesday had shown an overall increase of 12,228 infections over Monday, with the ministry claiming that 4,584 had occurred in a 24-hour period.

Monday had seen an overall increase of 25,886 infections over Friday, yet 2,344 in a 24-hour period. The ministry has not been updating its figures during the weekends since Friday 3 July.

Of the 5,400 new infections claimed by the Health Ministry to have only been registered in the past 24 hours on Wednesday 25 November, the numbers per region are as follows:

  • 1,105 in Madrid (last 24 hour increase was 1,029)
  • 832 in Catalonia (954)
  • 622 in the Basque Country (520)
  • 422 in Andalusia (254)
  • 412 in Galicia (382)
  • 399 in Asturias (221)
  • 322 in Aragón (236)
  • 252 in the Valencia Region (148)
  • 192 in Extremadura (164)
  • 141 in the Canary Islands (116)
  • 128 in Cantabria (133)
  • 123 in Murcia (61)
  • 114 in La Rioja (45)
  • 106 in Navarra (141)
  • 101 in Castilla La Mancha (53)
  • 77 in the Balearic Islands (56)
  • 10 in Castilla y León (21)
  • 15 in Ceuta (23)
  • 27 in Melilla (27)

New ‘State of Alarm’ – restrictions across Spain

The Spanish Congress recently voted to extend the new State of Alarm until 9 May 2021. The nationwide State of Alarm was declared on Sunday 25 October to combat further cases of Coronavirus, initially for a period of 15 days. The key purpose is to enable the regional governments of Spain the legal requirements to impose and enforce nighttime curfews and other restrictions, where required. Negative PCR test required

From Monday 23 November, travellers arriving in Spain from high-risk countries must show proof of a negative PCR test done within 72 hours of arrival. *Discrepancies in figures

Spain’s National Statistics Institute (INE) published figures showing that the number of deaths for the first 21 weeks of 2020 were 24% higher than for the same period in 2019 – based on information received from the country’s civil registries (1 January to 24 May). The number of deaths during this period for 2020 was 43,945 higher than in 2019.
