CORONAVIRUS in SPAIN – latest Health Ministry figures
The latest official figure* released by the Spanish Health Ministry on Tuesday 17 November for the number of people who have tested positive for Coronavirus (Covid-19) since the start of the pandemic is now 1,510,023. This is an overall increase of 13,159 against the figure released on Monday. Last Tuesday’s data had shown an overall increase of 17,395. The ministry claims that 5,897 of these infections have occurred in the past 24 hours (the figure had been 7,552 last Tuesday for a 24 hour period).
The overall accumulated incidence rate for Spain is now 465.86 per 100,000 inhabitants for the past 14 days. It is now under 500 in eight regions: the Balearic Islands (247.33), the Canary Islands (82.38), Castilla La Mancha (469.19), Catalonia (490.64), the Valencia region (295.46), Extremadura (457.15), Galicia (295.28) and Madrid (324.25).
The peak of recorded infections for a 24-hour period during this ‘second wave’ in Spain was on 30 October, when 9,723 new cases were registered. During the ‘first wave’, it was on 31 March when 9,222 new cases were registered.
Of the 13,159 overall increase in confirmed cases since Monday’s figures, 2,056 are in Catalonia, 1,941 in Andalusia, 1,850 in the Valencia region, 1,440 in Madrid and 1,196 in Castilla y León.
There have now been 219,077 cases of Coronavirus detected in the past 14 days – out of the total 1,510,023. The figure for the past 7 days is 90,953.
According to the latest data, the number of people currently requiring hospital treatment for Covid-19 is 20,007 across Spain – of which 3,127 are in intensive care (UCI). This currently represents a total 32.31% occupation of intensive care wards for Covid-19 patients across Spain (Monday’s figure was 32.8%). Hospital data could include patients who have shown symptoms of Coronavirus, but are still awaiting test results. The full data shows the numbers per region and % occupancy of UCI wards.
The official figure* for the total number of Coronavirus-related deaths on Tuesday 17 November is now 41,688 – an increase of 435 since Monday – the highest increase of deaths to date for a 24-hour period during this ‘second wave’ in Spain. It is now a total of 1,247 deaths in the last 7 days.
The peak of recorded deaths for a 24-hour period during the ‘first wave’ was on 2 April when 950 deaths were registered.
Increase in infections
Figures released on Monday had shown an overall increase of 38,273 infections over Friday, with the ministry claiming that 3,321 had occurred in a 24 hour period.
Friday had seen an overall increase of 21,371 infections over Thursday, yet 8,775 in a 24 hour period. The ministry has not been updating its figures during the weekends since Friday 3 July.
Of the 5,897 new infections claimed by the Health Ministry to have only been registered in the past 24 hours on Tuesday 17 November, the numbers per region are as follows:
- 1,407 in Catalonia (last 24 hour increase was 359)
- 1,255 in Madrid (247)
- 766 in the Basque Country (713)
- 441 in Galicia (501)
- 370 in Aragón (266)
- 332 in Andalusia (303)
- 274 in Asturias (236)
- 238 in Cantabria (130)
- 179 in Extremadura (106)
- 138 in Navarra (142)
- 99 in the Balearic Islands (63)
- 90 in Castilla La Mancha (31)
- 69 in La Rioja (60)
- 66 in the Valencia Region (41)
- 64 in the Canary Islands (59)
- 48 in Murcia (37)
- 9 in Castilla y León (5)
- 35 in Ceuta (7)
- 17 in Melilla (15)

New ‘State of Alarm’ – restrictions across Spain
The Spanish Congress recently voted to extend the new State of Alarm until 9 May 2021. The nationwide State of Alarm was declared on Sunday 25 October to combat further cases of Coronavirus, initially for a period of 15 days. The key purpose is to enable the regional governments of Spain the legal requirements to impose and enforce nighttime curfews and other restrictions, where required. Most regions have now issued border closures and there are many municipality confinements. Many regions have also restricted the opening hours of bars and restaurants, or ordered their closure. *Discrepancies in figures
Although the Health Ministry updated its official Coronavirus mortality figures on 19 June following discrepancies with the data released by some of the country’s regional health authorities – there are still differences in the ‘excess mortality’ figures published for Spain during the first half of this year. Spain’s National Statistics Institute (INE) published figures showing that the number of deaths for the first 21 weeks of 2020 were 24% higher than for the same period in 2019 – based on information received from the country’s civil registries (1 January to 24 May). The number of deaths during this period for 2020 was 43,945 higher than in 2019.
