Cape Verde marked their first-ever World Cup appearance with a memorable result on Monday, holding European champions Spain to a goalless draw in one of the biggest surprises of the tournament so far.
The World Cup newcomers, ranked 67th in the world and representing a nation of just over half a million people, produced a disciplined defensive display inspired by veteran goalkeeper Vozinha, who repeatedly denied Spain as the favourites failed to find a breakthrough in their Group H opener.
The result leaves both teams level on one point at the top of the group ahead of the later clash between Saudi Arabia and Uruguay. ALSO READ: Spain ready for World Cup opener after Peru victory, but Uruguay threat awaits in Group H.
Spain arrived at the tournament among the leading contenders for the title, with coach Luis de la Fuente even describing his squad as the strongest in the competition. However, despite dominating possession for long periods, the 2010 world champions struggled to convert their superiority into clear-cut chances. The Spanish side’s best opportunities came before half-time as Vozinha delivered a string of outstanding saves.
Barcelona forward Ferran Torres came closest to breaking the deadlock when he turned Marc Cucurella’s cross against the crossbar six minutes before the interval. Vozinha then reacted brilliantly to tip Mikel Oyarzabal’s looping header from the rebound over the bar.
The 40-year-old goalkeeper continued to frustrate Spain, denying Torres again before producing further saves from Aymeric Laporte and Pedri to keep the score level heading into the break.
Cape Verde’s resilience was all the more impressive given the quality of the opposition. Spain’s squad is packed with international stars and is seeking a second World Cup crown after lifting the trophy in South Africa in 2010.
In contrast to the extreme heat experienced at some other tournament venues, Atlanta’s state-of-the-art air-conditioned stadium offered comfortable playing conditions, leaving little room for excuses regarding Spain’s slow and often predictable build-up play. At one stage, supporters even greeted a hydration break with boos as frustration grew inside the stadium.
Cape Verde continued to defend stubbornly throughout the second half, limiting Spain’s opportunities and remaining organised under increasing pressure.
De la Fuente eventually turned to teenage sensation Lamine Yamal, who was making his return from injury. The winger’s introduction injected fresh energy into Spain’s attack and immediately lifted the crowd. ALSO READ: Spain heads to World Cup without any Real Madrid players as Barça dominates squad.
Yamal helped create a chance for fellow substitute Mikel Merino, although his effort was comfortably saved by Vozinha. The Barcelona youngster also played a role in another promising move that ended with an Oyarzabal effort being deflected over the bar.
However, not even Yamal could inspire Spain to victory.
In fact, Cape Verde nearly completed an even greater shock in the closing moments. Diney Borges rose to meet a cross with a header that threatened to snatch a famous winner, but Spain goalkeeper Unai Simón was well positioned to make the save.
The final whistle confirmed a historic point for the Blue Sharks in their first match on football’s biggest stage and underlined why De la Fuente had warned beforehand that Cape Verde could emerge as one of the surprise packages of the tournament. For Spain, the draw served as an early warning that reputation alone will count for little in the weeks ahead. Their inability to turn dominance into goals echoed some of the frustrations that contributed to disappointing World Cup exits in recent years.
Yet there is also a reminder that Spain’s only previous World Cup triumph began with an unexpected setback, a shock defeat to Switzerland in 2010 before they recovered to lift the trophy.
They will now look to bounce back when they face Saudi Arabia in Atlanta on Sunday, while Cape Verde can take enormous confidence from a result that will be celebrated across the island nation for years to come.
