Sevilla striker Rafa Mir (main image) has been sentenced to eight-and-a-half years in prison after a court in Valencia found him guilty of sexual assault and bodily harm offences linked to an incident involving two women in 2024.
The ruling was announced on Monday by the High Court of Justice of the Valencian Community, which said Mir had been convicted of one count of sexual assault and one count of bodily harm by Valencia’s provincial court. The verdict can still be appealed.
According to the court, the offences occurred on 1 September 2024, at Mir’s home in the town of Bétera, near Valencia, after the footballer and a friend met two women at a nightclub.
Mir, 28, was handed a seven-year prison sentence for sexual assault and an additional 18 months for causing physical harm, bringing his total sentence to eight-and-a-half years. The court also ordered him to pay the victim €64,000 in compensation.
A second defendant, identified in court documents as Pablo J. G., was also convicted. He received a prison sentence of two-and-a-half years for sexual assault and an offence against moral integrity, as well as a small fine relating to a minor bodily harm offence.
Mir denied any wrongdoing throughout the proceedings and pleaded not guilty. During the trial, which took place on 28 May, he maintained that the sexual relations had been consensual.
The striker was arrested shortly after the alleged incident in September 2024 and was suspended by Valencia CF for two matches. During the 2025-26 season he played on loan at Elche from Sevilla, with his contract at the Alicante club due to expire at the end of June.
Sevilla CF issued the following statement on Monday following the court’s decision:
‘The club, in light of the judgment issued by Section Four of the Provincial Court of Valencia in which footballer Rafa Mir – currently on loan at Elche CF until June 30 – is sentenced to eight and a half years, states its utmost respect for judicial proceedings and expresses our firm and unequivocal condemnation of any type of violence, abuse, or sexual assault. Such conduct has no place in our society or in the values promoted by sport.’
Mir came through the youth ranks at Valencia before joining English Premier League side Wolverhampton Wanderers in 2018. He later returned to Spain, signing for Sevilla in 2021, and was loaned back to Valencia in July 2024. He has also represented Spain at youth international level.
The case centred on allegations that Mir and his friend sexually assaulted two women after they went to the footballer’s home following a night out. The court’s decision marks the conclusion of the initial trial process, although both defendants retain the right to challenge the verdict before a higher court.
