Sand dredged from the Sitges port to be used for the town’s beaches

The sand dredged from the mouth of Sitges port will again be used for the town’s beaches, it was agreed at a recent plenary meeting of Sitges Town Council.

The main opposition parties of PSC-El Margalló and Junts per Sitges had proposed the motion, against the position of the local government team, and which sparked an intense debate about the use of the dredge.

‘Let the sand of Sitges stay in Sitges,’ summed up the local PP councillor Eva García, who supported the motion together with Vox and Fets per Sitges, giving a total of 11 votes against the 10 votes of the ERC, SGI, Verds en Comú Podem and Guanyem Sitges.

While the proposal is for the sand to be ‘re-used in a sustainable way’, the debate focused on long-term approaches as well as emergency measures, to guarantee sand not just for the next summer season but to also find solutions to preserve one of the main assets of Sitges as a tourist destination, on which ‘hundreds of families depend’.

The local government continues to see the use of the dredge as an ‘economically and ecologically unsustainable’ option, and instead pointed to the observations of the recently formed Coastal Management Board.
