New building for Sitges School of Music will offer greater capacity and courses

The planned new building for the Sitges Municipal School of Music will have greater capacity and offer more educational opportunities, the Sitges Town Council has said.

The construction of the building for the Montserrat Almirall Municipal School of Music in Sitges will begin next year, thanks to the financial allocation provided for in the 2024 budget, and which is estimated at around €1.4 million. With this new facility, which will be attached to the local Espai Jove’ (Youth Space), it will be possible to reach a capacity of 280 students (currently there are 180) and it will also offer more musical educational opportunities.

The local councillor for culture and education, Albert Oliver-Rodés, said that ‘the creation of a building of its own for the School of Music is a long-standing aspiration that will finally take shape next year’. He said that ‘currently, this musical education takes place at the Barrachina School, with a good atmosphere of co-existence, but it is true that the Barrachina School also needs its own space and will have it when the new building is in use’.

The definitive location of the Municipal School of Music will be at the back of the Espai Jove. This is an area planned for municipal equipment and the fact of having two linked facilities will allow, for example, to be able to share a concierge or for the music students to have the rehearsal rooms that are already in the Espai Jove. In addition, it is expected that in the future a small auditorium will be built for around 150 people next to the old masia of Mas Milà.

The new building of the music school will have a ground floor with 5 classrooms (two large) and an office. This will also be the layout of the first floor. The roof of the building is planned to incorporate solar panels and councillor Oliver-Rodés said that ‘it will be a building designed to be a music school, modern and integrated into the environment’.

Once the works are completed, new trees will be planted and the pine grove at the entrance to the Espai Jove will also be maintained.
