CORONAVIRUS in SPAIN – latest Health Ministry figures

The latest official figure released by the Spanish Health Ministry on Thursday 12 Aug for the number of people who have tested positive for Coronavirus since the start of the pandemic is now 4,677,883. This is an overall increase of 17,410 against the figure released on Wednesday, of which 8,554 have been registered in the past 24 hours.

Wednesday had seen an overall increase of 17,023 over Tuesday, of which 9,192 were registered in 24 hours. The peak of recorded infections for a 24-hour period during the pandemic in Spain was on 21 January, when 18,504 cases were registered.

The overall incidence rate across Spain has fallen below 500 for the first time since 14 July, by 20 points to 483.12 per 100,000 inhabitants for the past 14 days. On Wednesday it was 503.42 and Tuesday 528.38.

The incidence rate has fallen since yesterday for each age group per 100,000 inhabitants for the past 14 days, as follows:

  • Under 11 – 487 (yesterday was 503)
  • Aged 12-19 – 1,043 (1,091)
  • Aged 20-29 – 992 (1,055)
  • Aged 30-39 – 525 (555)
  • Aged 40-49 – 342 (354)
  • Aged 50-59 – 304 (311)
  • Agend 60-69 – 267 (275)
  • Aged 70-79 – 213 (217)
  • Over 80 – 287 (288)

There have now been 229,242 cases of Coronavirus detected in the past 14 days – out of the total 4,677,883. The figure for the past 7 days is 93,829

There are currently 9,478 people requiring hospital treatment for Covid-19 in Spain (9,820 yesterday), of which 1,921 are in intensive care (1,947). This represents 20.79% occupation of intensive care units (ICUs) by Covid-19 patients across Spain (21.06%). It remains highest at 43.91% in Catalonia (45.64%).

The official figure for the total number of Coronavirus-related deaths since the start of the pandemic on Thursday 12 Aug is 82,407 – an increase of 87 since Wednesday.

Increase in infections per region

Of the 8,554 new infections to have only been registered in the past 24 hours on Thursday 12 Aug, the numbers per region are as follows:

  • 2,047 in Madrid (last 24 hour increase was 2,449)
  • 1,192 in Catalonia (1,296)
  • 865 in the Basque Country (854)
  • 636 in Castilla y León (738)
  • 508 in Andalusia (562)
  • 490 in the Canary Islands (527)
  • 419 in Aragón (407)
  • 412 in Galicia (411)
  • 383 in Extremadura (342)
  • 362 in Murcia (360)
  • 246 in Cantabria (173)
  • 242 in Navarra (223)
  • 218 in the Valencia Region (249)
  • 189 in Asturias (175)
  • 106 in the Balearic Islands (171)
  • 106 in La Rioja (152)
  • 57 in Castilla La Mancha (41) 
  • 61 in Ceuta (41)
  • 15 in Melilla (21)

Covid-19 Vaccinations in Spain

Latest figures (up to 12 Aug) show that Spain has administered 60,449,774 jabs of Covid-19 vaccines. 34,196,761 people have now received at least one jab, representing 72.1% of the total population. 29,221,276 people have now been fully vaccinated, which is 61.6% of the total population.
